Communication: The school uses the Aladdin “text” facility to communicate important messages to parents. Accordingly, it is very important that we have an up-to-date mobile number for you. Our text facility does not allow for replies so please email or phone the school if you wish to contact us. An emergency contact number should also be written in your child’s journal. Please let us know if you home/email address has changed.
Teachers will use the class See Saw platform for communicating with you (Monday-Friday). Due to teacher/class changes some previous accounts may need to be deleted and a new account will be set up.
We have a strict healthy eating policy in place in Rahara N.S. This can be viewed on our website www.rahara.com. One small treat is allowed on Fridays only. Pupils attending Afterschool may avail of kitchen facilities after 3:00 only. Rahara N.S is involved in the Green Schools Initiative and we encourage families to cut down on single use plastics such as cling film etc. All pupils must bring home their daily waste/packaging from their lunches.
Please ensure that your child wears their uniform to school every day and that all items of clothing are marked clearly with your child’s name. The uniform is as follows:
• Navy school crested jumper, this will be available to purchase on myschooljumper.ie from Monday 13th of September, grey pinafore/skirt/trousers and blue t-shirt.
• On P.E. days pupils may wear crested jumper/plain navy round-neck sweater and plain navy tracksuit bottoms (No Logos; stripes; hoody; branded top/bottoms; football jersey).
County Photos will visit our school on Wednesday 24th of November. Please wear full school uniform on this day.
Football training will commence on Wednesday 15th September until the October midterm. Pupils must wear gum shields. Please ensure that these have been ‘moulded’ before you bring them to school and that the box/container is clearly marked with your child’s name to prevent confusion.
School will be closed for all pupils on Friday 1st of October to facilitate teacher planning/training for the new Primary Language Curriculum.

Spelling Bee 2016
Congratulations to Beckham Janzen, 6th class, who is our ‘Spelling Bee’ 2016 champion. Beckham will represent the school in the county finals next Monday. We wish him the best of luck!
We would like to thank everybody who made the open evening a success. All help, including distributing flyers, hanging up posters and ‘spreading the good word’, is greatly appreciated by staff.
School will close this Friday 26th February as our school is used as a polling station for the upcoming elections.
Engineers Week 2016
All pupils (Infants-6th) will attend an Engineering workshop in the Ardagh and Heritage Creative Centre, Co. Longford on Wednesday 2nd March. This is in conjunction with our Discover Primary Science and Maths programme. Pupils will investigate engineering with a civil engineer and build a model of a bridge. After lunch, the pupils will attend a 1916 workshop and learn about toys and games a hundred years ago. Pupils should wear their full school uniform and bring a packed lunch and drink. The bus will depart at 9am sharp and return at 3:30pm approx. Mrs Costello will send a text to parents, when leaving the venue, for a more accurate estimated time of arrival. The bus and workshops are funded by the Board of Management.
Proclamation day- 15th March 2016
Irish TV film crew will visit Rahara NS on the 15th March to film the raising of our National Flag for Proclamation Day. They will also interview pupils about our school and all the initiatives that we are involved in. More details to follow.
Grandparents Day 2015
A big thank-you to all the grandparents who attended our Grandparents Prayer Service in Rahara NS on the 2nd of February. It was a lovely service and a wonderful opportunity for grandparents to catch a glimpse of the day in a life of our school.
SPHE -Meditation & Mindfulness
Louise Shanagher, children’s therapist, and artist, Rose Finnerty, visited our school in February to give four meditation workshops to the pupils. This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for the pupils and it gave the pupils some great strategies for dealing with their worries and anxieties.
Staff would like to continue their wonderful work through teacher-led mindfulness sessions. These sessions are linked to the SPHE curriculum. Teachers will be using a resource called ‘The Zone’ which encourages relaxation and confidence. The children will be introduced to awareness of breath, thoughts and emotions through visualisation, affirmation and breathing techniques. This CD is available to parents should they wish to listen to it, prior to the mindfulness sessions.
Mrs Costello attended the IPPN (Irish Primary Principal’s Network) Conference in Dublin on the 27th and 28th January.
Ms. O’Reilly will attend her Post Graduate course in Special Needs in NUIG between 22nd Feb-5th March. Ms. Irwin will cover her leave.
Easter/St. Patrick’s Day Closures
School will close at 12:30pm on Wednesday 16th March for St. Patrick’s day and Easter, combined. School will re-open on Monday 4th April at 9:20am.
World Book Day 2016
Pupils are invited to dress-up as a character from a book, on Thursday 3rd March, for World Book Day!
Seachtain na Gaeilge
SNAG 2016 will take place in Rahara NS between 7th-16th March. Pupils are encouraged to speak ‘as gaeilge’ during this time. There will be dancing, singing, games and prizes throughout the week. Lá Glas will take place on Wednesday 16th March. Pupils are encouraged to wear green clothes on that day.
‘One Good Idea’ Project
Our four 6th class pupils, team Carbondos, have been selected as one of the top 20 teams in Ireland to go through to the semi-finals of the ‘One Good Idea’ project. The pupils have coded a carbon footprint quiz through the app ‘Hopscotch’. This app is free to download on any apple device. Please tell all your friends and family about the game and encourage them to take the Carbondos quiz. The pupils have designed a poster and composed a rap about CO2! The pupils must now create a 4 minute presentation for the SEAI judges. You can also follow team Carbondos on Facebook. www.facebook.com/Carbondos
We have included a booklet about healthy lunches from the HSE. Remember that a small treat is allowed on Fridays only!

A meeting for parents of 6th class pupils, who will be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation, will take place in Knockcroghery NS @ 7:45pm on Wednesday 9th December.
1916 Centenary Celebrations
Lieutenant Billy Henshaw will visit our school on Monday 21st December to present us with an Irish Flag and the Proclamation of the Rebublic. Following this, the all pupils will perform a Play about the 1916 Rising.
All parents, grandparents and extended family members are invited to this special event. The celebreation will commence at 1:30pm.
Our newly elected Parents Nominees are Noreen Fallon and Simon Moran. Congratulations to both parents.
The Community Reps are Nuala Dolan and Jimmy Murray. The other members of the board are Fr. Ray Milton, Tommy Carney, Ruth Costello and Aoife McGowan.
We look forward to working together on our new BOM.
School will close on Tuesday 22nd December @ 12:30pm for Christmas holidays. Pupils may wear their Christmas Jumpers to school on this day!
School opens for Term 2 on Wednesday 6th January 2016 @ 9;20am.
All pupils and staff will attend 10am mass in Rahara church on Wednesday 6th January, to celebrate the feast of Epiphany.
A cake sale will take place in Rahara NS on Sunday 13th December following 10am mass. All proceeds will go to the Alzheimers Association.
The final swimming lesson takes place on Thursday 17th December. Please return all monies to the school by then as both the bus and swimming pool have to be paid.
Summer Works Scheme 2016
Mrs. Costello has applied to the Dept. of Education for a grant to upgrade all school toilets. If granted, refurbishment will take place during Summer 2016.
Roscommon Solstice Choir
Lecarrow Benevolent Fund Committee will present the Roscommon Solstice Choir and 5th & 6th class pupils from our parish schools, in a concert on Friday 18th December in Knockcroghery Church. Tickets cost €10 and are available to purchase in school. 5th & 6th class pupils go free as they are performing on the night. All proceeds go to Lecarrow Benevolent Fund.
Mrs Costello will take parental leave from 14th -18th December. This leave has been sanctioned by the BOM and Ms. Irwin will cover the week.
Mrs. McGowan will return to school on Monday 21st December.
We wish Ms. Connolly very best in her future career. She will be missed greatly by the staff, pupils and parents.
Holy Day – 8th December
All pupils and staff will attend 10am mass in Rahara church on Tuesday 8th December, to celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Super Troopers is a Healthy Homework programme designed to increase children’s level of physical activity. Children should complete their short activity nightly from their Activity Journal. Children can complete this alone or get parents involved. Please sign this Journal weekly. Pupils are currently working on Navy, Week 5 in their ST Journals.
Pupils will attend the “Little Light Christmas Show” in Roscommon Arts Centre on Wednesday 2nd December. Please ensure that your child arrives in school at 9:20am sharp on Wednesday as the bus will depart shortly thereafter. The cost of the show and the bus is €10 per child.
“The Donkey’s Back” Christmas show will take place in Rahara NS on Wednesday 16th December. OM Ireland have produced another entertaining Christmas show that explains the true meaning of Christmas. This show is free.

We have completed our Blue Star Award 2015 project and submitted it for inspection. The pupils covererd the four areas which included EU Geography, EU History, EU Culture and the Institutions of the EU. We also celebrated Europe Day on May 8th and hosted an EU food tasting fair!

Pupils may wear shorts, hats, sandals with a school t-shirt over the coming days. Please ensure your child wears sunblock/cream.
School reports will be posted over the coming days. Reports will include results of standardised tests, school calendar 2014-15, booklists, a “Help My Kids Learn” booklet for parents and an NCCA Sten explaination sheet for parents.
If you wish to order a school jumper, you may browse through the sample jumpers in our school entrance hall and fill in the order sheet.
New infants are invited to our school on Friday 27th June for a taster morning. We are looking forward to meeting our new pupils!
Sixth class graduation dinner party will take place in the school on Tuesday 24th June. Good luck to our graduates on their transition to post-primary school this year!
Special Interest Talks
All pupils will be assessed in the coming days. Please ensure your child prepares and practices their special interest talk at home. A mind map must be prepared in advance of SIT outlining the vocabulary that will be used.
School will close @ 12:30pm on Friday 27th June for Summer holidays. The new school year starts on Thursday 28th August @ 9:20am
Pupils are extremely busy rehearsing for our school play! The play will take place on Thursday 26th June @ 6pm. Pupils will need to arrive at Culleen Hall from 5:15pm to get into costume and make-up.
There will be no interval during the play but we will have a cover charge on the door. Please invite your family and friends along as the play is very entertaining!
Any volunteers, who would like to help with the cover charge on the door, please contact the staff.
On Wednesday 25th & Thursday 26th the pupils will travel by bus to Culleen Hall to rehearse. Pupils must be collected from Culleen Hall next Wednesday & Thursday @ 3pm.

I wish to express our appreciation to all the parents who have helped and suported us all year. I am especially grateful to the parents who have been available to help with lifts to/from all the matches during Term 3! Thank you!

Pupils from Rahara National School participated in Fairtrade Friday celebrations on Friday 7th March. During Fairtrade fortnight the staff delivered lessons on Fairtrade to all pupils throughout the school teaching the pupils all about the concept of ‘Fairtrade’. Pupils learnt that Fairtrade guarantees a better deal for the farmers in developing countries. They also learned about Fairtrade bananas from the Dominican Republic, coffee from Uganda, tea from India and sugar from Malawi.
The school is currently working towards its sixth Green Schools Award for Global Citizenship under the guidance of the Green schools co-ordinator, Mrs. Aoife McGowan. By learning all about Fairtrade the pupils are deepening their understanding of global citizenship.
On Friday 7th March the pupils celebrated Fairtrade Friday when the staff transformed their GP hall into a café! The staff served Fairtrade ONLY products to the pupils. The pupils enjoyed Fairtrade hot chocolate, tea, coffee, sugar and Fairtrade chocolate chip cookies. Pupils also participated in a chocolate taste test, sampling both Fairtrade and non-Fairtrade chocolate and distinguishing the difference between the two.
A Fairtrade poster competition took place and the two winners, Beckham Janzen and Rachel Fallon, both received a €5 Marks & Spencer’s voucher each. The prize was sponsored by M&S, Athlone.
The staff of Rahara NS has converted their staff room into a Fairtrade staffroom. Only Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar will be available to all visitors to our school from here on in! Rahara NS hopes to become a Fairtrade school and gain the Fairtrade School award!

The senior room are busy practicing persuasive writing and doing debates.
The 5th & 6th class maths set are learning about money and converting Euro into different currencies.
The 3rd & 4th class maths set are busy learning about 2-D shapes and angles.
5th & 6th classes went to see a production of “Grease” which was staged by Summerhill and St Aloysius colleges. They have learned some of the songs from the musical.
Amnesty International- Friendship week
The school is currently celebrating Friendship week which is Amnesty International Ireland’s annual celebration of friendship, solidarity and human rights. The pupils will be learning about friendship and human rights. There are friendship bracelets on sale in the school for €2 each.
The pupils are collecting materials to create a friendship quilt.
In Maths, Aaron is busy measuring using lollipop sticks! Pupils are busy recording the daily temperature and rainfall as part of our Science Flag.
2nd class are currently preparing for their first confession and are learning their prayers.
We are focusing on how to write and explanation in English and all classes in the Junior room are asked to write interesting sentences using the grammar that they learned.
As part of our Science award we are participating in the Greenwave programme. We are asking pupils to look out for signs of Spring in Rahara and to take a photograph of one of the following:
-Horse Chestnut bud bursting
-Hawthorn bud bursting
-Ash bud bursting

There will be a staff meeting on Wednesday 26th February from 2 – 4 pm. All children will be going home from school at 2pm on that day.
The parent/teacher meetings have been postponed until the week of 3rd – 7th March. Same day and times applies for each family. Please contact us if those days and times don’t suit. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
Fairtrade fortnight begins on Monday 24th February. As part of our Green Schools programme we hope to make Rahara NS a Fairtrade school! During Fairtrade fortnight pupils will be learning about the fairtrade mark. We are asking pupils & parents to look out for fairtrade label on food/clothes when out shopping.

Swimming lessons for all pupils will begin on Thursday 27th February and end on 10th April (7 lessons). A letter regarding same has been sent home to all families.

Congratulations to Kai Janzen who won the Spelling Bee competition in our school this week. Kai will represent our school in the Roscommon county final in Boyle on the 5th February 2014. The Eason Spelling Bee competition is an all-Ireland spelling competition open to all 5th & 6th class pupils. Every school hosts an in-school Spelling Bee competition to select a winner to go through to the next stage, the county final.
This year over 1000 primary schools are taking part. We wish Kai every success in the next round!

The pupils in the senior room are busy learning about New Zealand and the Maori Culture. Pupils are learning to sing “Irelands Call” and the New Zealand “Haka”. The 5th& 6th class maths set are learning decimals and the 3rd & 4th class set are learning about subtraction.
The senior pupils constructed famine ships from recyclable materials. We tested the ships to see if they could float and all were successful.
The junior room are enjoying showing each other their favourite book in show & tell. They are busy learning how to use dictionaries to find the correct spelling and meaning of words.
They are learning all about homes and comparing them to homes in the past.
Pupils will be making & designing their own mosaics. Second class is starting to learn their prayers for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Teresa Melia, our diocesan advisor, will visit the classes on Wednesday 27th November, on behalf of Bishop Jones.
Science Week 2013
The pupils visited AIT on Tuesday 12th November to attend a Science show. The BOM paid for the bus. Dr Ken Farquhar entertained both teachers and pupils with his juggling and circus activities, whilst teaching the pupils about gravity and forces.
Suzanne Dempsey visited our school on Wednesday 13th November to carry out “Wacky Water Experiments” with all classes. The pupils learned about water quality and water density. The pupils carried out various experiments and investigated creatures from a local river.

School Self Evaluation
We are targeting oral language this year.
We are building our vocabulary and learning how to give oral presentations. Pupils will be assessed in Nov/Dec by way of special interest talks. Pupils have been learning how to structure and plan an oral presentation.
Cyber Bullying Talk
The gardai will host a talk for parents on the issue of cyber bullying in Culleen Hall on Tuesday 19th November @ 8pm. All parents are welcome and I would recommend that all parents attend.
The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success. Pupils engaged in reading for pleasure. The school will get €224 worth of free books for our library. Thanks to all parents who supported last week’s book fair.
There will be a non-uniform day tomorrow Friday 15th November, to raise fund for GOAL, who are assisting in the rescue efforts in the Philippines. Pupils may bring a donation for GOAL to school.
Ms Costello will be taking parental leave in December. Ms Duignan will be teaching the senior room for December. Ms Malone will be returning to Rahara on Monday 18th November.

A non-uniform day took place in Rahara N.S. on Friday 15th November 2013. Pupils were asked to bring a donation for GOAL on the day. GOAL are working, on the ground, in the Philippines assisting in the rescue effort after the devestating typhoon on Friday 8th November 2013.
The pupils and parents of Rahara N.S. raised €117.26 for GOAL. Well done!
